Alaskan cable operator General Communications Inc. (GCI) will deploy Evolution Digital’s TiVo-enabled eBox hybrid set-tops to subscribers in select regions, the companies announced.
GCI, which touted nearly 109,000 pay-TV subscribers through the third quarter, follows WOW!, which has made eBox the centerpiece of its “Swivel” video platform. Mediacom Communications, Advanced Cable Communications and several NCTC-member cable operators have since signed to deploy the IP-capable device, as well.
“Evolution Digital’s eBox is a one of a kind offering, as it allows us to offer our subscribers the best content available across multiple video services, making the viewing experience enriched and streamlined,” said GCI spokeswoman Heather Handyside,
Evolution’s hybrid IP/QAM set-tops provide small and mid-sized cable operators with inexpensive HD devices that can deliver both linear and online video, without a DVR or CableCard.
The hardware can be deployed as an HD set-top or a “zapper”-class box. With a change in configurations, eBox can be a client in Evolution’s multi-room DVR, the vendor noted. And as an operator moves to a cloud content strategy, it can be a client on a cloud DVR.
“We believe it is very innovative and the right step forward to bring IP enabled services, a more robust OTT lineup, and cutting edge UI to a segment of our customers that doesn’t need or want a full linear lineup,” said Torryon Coleman, VP of product development and technology integration, WOW!, in an interview with FierceCable in August. “Some of these advanced services are currently being offered through our Ultra platform. Call these customers cord shavers, but they that still want internet, Wi-Fi, OTT, and other broadband enabled services.”
