Set-top vendor Evolution Digital is morphing into a managed service provider with the launch of a “contextually aware” IP video platform designed to help pay TV distributors drive increased video-on-demand and pay per view revenue.

Centennial, Colo.-based Evolution said eVUE-TV curates content recommendations based on a subscriber’s channel surfing habits. Operators can let Evolution run the platform from its content distribution hub in Chicago, or Evolution can build a distributed platform inside a service provider’s CDN.

Evolution CTO Brent Smith said in Monday’s announcement that eVUE TV lets providers “combine the most popular [VOD] titles with their live TV offerings … while avoiding costly infrastructure upgrades.”

The move comes nearly six months after Evolution, which has made a business supplying low-cost digital tuning adapters (DTAs) and hybrid set-tops to Tier 1 and Tier 2 providers, acquired IP video platform developer i-Velozity.
